During the winter, Icelanders hardly see the sun. From December to late February, the sun rises around 11:00AM, and sets just after 4PM. As residents of one of the “darkest” regions in the world during winter, Icelanders are at high risk of developing Seasonal Affective Disorder, a type of depression that occurs in winter. Yet, despite the high odds, many Icelanders say they’ve never had SAD, with the country reporting lower levels than the United States and Europe. Their secret? Eating lots of fish.
As the World Population Review reported in 2022, Iceland lead the world’s consumption of fish, with the average resident eating over over 87.1kgs ( or 192 lbs) of seafood each year. It isn’t just because of taste. By regularly consuming seafood, Icelanders are able to boost their omega levels, memory retention, bone health, and more.

At Mare Oyster Bar, we took a look into the top benefits of eating fish during the winter. Read more below!
It’ll Help Your Immune System Fight Seasonal Illnesses
This winter, omega-3s can keep your immune system in top-shape by reducing inflammation and improving immune function. Fish that are rich in omega-3 include salmon, tuna, mackerel, and herring.
It’ll Make You Happier
Omega-3s can significantly improve your brain’s health. From reduced inflammation to regulated neurotransmitters, omega-3s benefits can also impact your mental health, too. As the Atlantic wrote, “Oil-rich cold-water fish like salmon, cod, and sardines, fish oil supplements, and some plant-based foods like walnuts contain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which research on other mood disorders suggests have an antidepressant effect.”
It’ll Help Your Dry Skin
Eating fish this winter can reduce skin inflammation, “which can lead to a breakdown of collagen and elastin, both of which keep skin looking youthful.” Additionally, fish that are rich in omega-3s can improve your skin’s texture, along with hydrating it.
It’ll Help Your Heart Stay Healthy
It’s true: your body is less active in winter than in summer. To combat lack of exercise, eating fish full of omega-3s can keep your heart happy and healthy. Not only does fish lower triglycerides (a type of fat), but it can also reduce high cholesterol and high blood pressure levels, too.
